It's very helpful to know what mentorship is and what to look for when considering to be mentored by another person or an organization. I believe that the more we know about mentorship the better the impact can be for everyone. Let's define what mentorship is: the influence, guidance, or direction given by a mentor.
Mentorship can start and end at any age of life. There are young children that have mentorship all the way up to elderly adults. The first thing to remember is that mentorship must be desired by the mentee. It is a two way connection and works best when both are open and invested. If a mentee feels like they don't want to be mentored or doesn't "need" it, they may not be in a place to benefit.
On the other hand, if someone desires mentorship from someone who is not willing to guide or help them, that can lead to a negative experience and outcome.
At LIFE GIRLS we are focused on mentoring young ladies starting from age 12 up to age 21. There is a purpose for our age group and we are fully open, available, and equip in serving ladies in this range. We believe that the better part of development happens greatly in these ages. This is where character is shaped, integrity is formed, positive or negative influences have the greatest impact over the rest of life.
Here's some things we want to bring to light in looking for mentorship if you are considering signing up your young ladies or yourself.
See if you desire mentorship and why (everyone has different reasons why they may seek out a mentorship. As long as it is something desired by the mentee it has a great change of being a positive outcome.
Seek out credible mentors and mentorship programs- Look for mentors who truly have a heart for others, they don't have to run an actual program but do your research on the mentors lifestyle and consistent actions. If they have helped others grow, expand and flourish. They will likely help you as well. Look for a program with mentors who are positive, friendly, and respectful. People come looking for something to make them better internally. That can be seen from the members of the program.
Find out the foundation of the mentorship- Is the mentorship foundation on teaching, educating, implementation, or more of an event focused, action oriented program? Some programs are based on Seasonal programs, summer events, or fundraisers.
Find out what suits you best. If you need mentorship on education, employment, or life skills, seek a program that focuses on classes.
Many successful adults, business owners, educators, or community leaders can attest that mentorship has benefited them and it is important!
